Pahalgam in deep winter is quieter, cheaper and, for a certain kind of traveller, better. Between December and February night temperatures sit below freezing and snow is common, sometimes heavily. The crowds that fill the Lidder-side path in July are gone. Sound carries differently. The valley you came to look at is white rather than green, and the light in the late afternoon is the reason photographers come in this season rather than the other one.
It rewards planning, though. After heavy snowfall the higher roads out of town can close for a day or two, and what is reachable on a given morning changes with the weather. Warm things to do on a cold day
- Wazwan by the bukhari. A slow Kashmiri dinner cooked in-house — rista, gushtaba, kahwa to finish.

- Snow at Betaab valley. About ten minutes upstream when the road is clear, and a different place entirely under snow.
- Doing very little. A balcony, a pot of kahwa, and the valley changing colour. This is a legitimate itinerary.
What to bring, and what not to bother with
Bring layers you can take off indoors — the usual mistake is packing for the outdoors and then sitting through dinner in a down jacket. Proper waterproof footwear with grip matters more than anything else you will pack; the paths ice over and hotel slippers are not a plan.
You do not need to bring a hot water bottle, an extension board for a heater, or a second blanket. Those are all workarounds for buildings that are not heated properly, and they are not needed here.
