The Royal Luxe arranges a bonfire in its grounds on request, most evenings, weather permitting. It is not a fixed nightly event with a schedule and a crowd — you ask the front desk during the day and they set it up for the evening. Kahwa comes out with it, and dinner from the hotel's Kashmiri kitchen can be served beside it. The hotel is in Dehwathu, above the Lidder valley at about 7,200 ft, with rooms from ₹6,500 per night.
How to get one lit
Plenty of hotels with bonfire in Pahalgam advertise the fact and then produce one on a schedule for a full terrace of guests, or not at all if the group is small. Ours is arranged per request, which is the version most people actually want.
Tell the desk in the morning, or mention it when you book. That is genuinely the whole process. The team needs a few hours' notice to set the fire and clear the spot, and they will tell you honestly if the evening is not going to work — high wind, steady rain or fresh snowfall makes it either unpleasant or unsafe, and on those nights the answer is the bukhari indoors instead.
There is no charge for the fire itself. What you eat and drink around it is billed as it would be anywhere else on the property, so a bonfire with kahwa costs you a pot of kahwa.

Weather decides
Clear or lightly cold evenings are ideal. Wind, rain and heavy snow are not, and the team will say so.

Winter, mostly
A bonfire is pleasant in October and it is the highlight of the stay in January. Cold air, snow on the deodars, a fire and a cup of kahwa is the combination guests photograph more than anything else here — and winter is also when Pahalgam is quietest and the rates are softest.
Because the hotel has only 11 rooms, an evening in the grounds does not turn into a function. It is usually one or two families or couples, not a coach party with a sound system. If you want the fire to yourself for an occasion, say so and the desk will try to arrange the evening around it.

Can the bonfire be arranged in winter and when it snows?
Winter is the best time for it, and a light snowfall is no obstacle. Heavy or ongoing snow, steady rain and strong wind are, and on those nights the team will tell you straight that it is not on rather than lighting something unpleasant. The bukhari and the dining room are the fallback, and the building itself is centrally heated throughout.
Is the bonfire private, or shared with other guests?
Usually shared, but the hotel has only 11 rooms, so 'shared' tends to mean one or two other couples or a family, not a crowd. If you want the evening to yourself for an anniversary or a proposal, tell the desk when you book and they will try to arrange it that way — a property this size can generally manage it with notice.
